Reopening Polk County Public Schools
Polk County Public Schools has created a task force to assist with planning for school to resume amid the coronavirus pandemic. The task force is comprised of district, health care, and community leaders, many of whom are also parents of students. The task force will meet regularly throughout the summer. Check back regularly for video recordings of their meetings, as well as updates on their discussions and decisions related to reopening.
Students return to campus and interact in person with teachers and classmates.
The goal will be to return to as much of a traditional classroom experience as possible. However, our task force is developing various health and safety protocols.
Some precautions may include:
– Symptom screenings for all students and staff members
– Frequent and thorough cleaning of campuses
– Hand sanitizer dispensers available throughout the campus
– Signage about good hygiene habits to prevent the spread of illness, including handwashing
Families who do not wish for their students to return to campus can choose to have their students enroll into Polk Virtual School.
Polk Virtual School is a way for students to take classes online and fulfill their K-12 educational requirements.
These online lessons are taught by PCPS teachers who will provide individualized instruction and encouragement.

In addition to Polk Virtual School, a second distance learning option is being developed that would allow students to remain enrolled in their school and pursue distance learning. The task force’s Instructional subcommittee has begun exploring how to create this option, and details will soon be finalized.
PCPS will update this webpage and social media as precautions are finalized. We will also use our automated telephone/email system to communicate with parents, guardians, and employees. To ensure that you receive these important messages, please make sure your child’s school has your current emergency contact information on file.
