Last Friday, students and staff from the Dental Assisting program at Traviss Technical College used their skills to provide free dental care to children in need.

The effort is part of a nationwide initiative called Give Kids A Smile, launched by the American Dental Association in 2003. Traviss participates every year with the help of the Polk County Dental Association.

Nearly 60 children received free treatment during last Friday’s event at Traviss — providing important health care for our community, as well as valuable experience for the college’s students.

“There are so many children that don’t have access to dental care, and no kid should have to wait months to see a dentist,” said Andrea LaRocca, a teacher with Traviss’ Dental Assisting program.

Next year’s Give Kids A Smile event is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 7, 2020 (appointments will open in December 2019). For more information about the Dental Assisting program at Traviss Technical College, click here.
