Polk County Public Schools has contracted with Self Care Decisions to offer students, parents and employees an online symptom checker that will help guide their health care decisions.

“Throughout the pandemic, I think we’ve all experienced the sense of having more health-related questions than answers,” said Linda King, PCPS’ director of risk management. “We’re pleased to offer our community this new resource that will help users assess their symptoms and make better-informed decisions.”

Developed by health care app company Self Care Decisions, the Symptom Checker product contains more than 280 care guides derived from clinical protocols used in more than 10,000 medical practices in the U.S. and Canada. A team of primary care and emergency doctors and nurses reviews and updates the content annually. More than 200 health systems have implemented Symptom Checker.

PCPS’ Symptom Checker is available at wellness.polkschoolsfl.com. The website contains a link to two versions of the Symptom Checker:

• One developed specifically for employees and their dependents
• One developed specifically for students and parents

Users will enter their age and gender to customize their experience. Symptom searches may be conducted via body area, alphabetical index or keyword search. Symptom Checker does not track or store any personal user data.

The Symptom Checker helps users determine what level of care is needed, if any, and how to relieve the symptoms of minor illnesses and injuries at home. It also provides dosage tables for common medications, first aid instructions, and parenting advice in categories such as family issues, injury prevention, discipline problems, eating and sleeping problems, school-related problems, and immunizations.

The employee version will provide care recommendations related to the PCPS Health Clinics and PCPS insurance-approved medical providers. The student/parent version will help connect users to facilities and service providers located near them.
