A few highlights from the Jan. 26, 2021 meeting of the Polk County School Board. The full meeting is available on our YouTube channel.

– Stambaugh Middle student Gabriela Alvarez (pictured) was formally recognized as Polk County’s representative for the Art in the Capitol Competition. The annual, statewide visual arts competition showcases the work of Florida’s middle school students. The winning art from each district is displayed in the Capitol building. Alvarez’s entry, “Taehyung,” was displayed during the 2020 legislative session.

– Congratulations to the following administrators who were officially appointed last night:
  • Lauren Gekakis, assistant principal at Loughman Oaks Elementary, previously a school-based coach at Loughman Oaks
  • Tony Johnson, assistant principal at Snively Elementary, previously a teacher interventionist at Laurel Elementary
  • Vivian Socorro, assistant principal at Palmetto Elementary, previously an acting assistant principal at Palmetto

– Bella Citta Elementary has been approved as the name of PCPS’ new elementary school, which will open in August in Davenport. The school’s mascot is the Bears.
