Polk County Public Schools is asking for the community’s help with selecting a mascot for our new elementary school being built in Davenport.

The school, located at 201 Bella Citta Blvd. in Davenport, will open in Aug. 2021.

The Polk County School Board has not yet officially approved a name for the school. Following a public survey, a naming committee selected Bella Citta Elementary, which school board members will consider at their Jan. 26 meeting.

Bella Citta Elementary pays tribute to the surrounding area of the school; translated from Italian, bella citta means “beautiful city.”

Mascot choices have been narrowed down to two possibilities: Bears or Panthers.

The school’s location in the rapidly growing northeast section of Polk is home to a wide range of animals, including a thriving bear population. Various sections of the county, including the Green Swamp, are believed to contain Florida panthers.

“Each creature is powerful, awe-inspiring and majestic,” said Peter McDougall, the new school’s principal. “We hope the winner inspires fierce school spirt in our students.”

An online survey is now open for members of the public to cast their vote. The survey is available here.

Voting will close Jan. 22.
