Young Poets Celebrated

We owe a few words of praise to our outstanding young poets.

Last month PCPS held the 47th annual Poetry Awards, where we recognized our district’s top middle and high school poets. Participating students and teachers were also presented with our 2023 poetry anthology, which features the published works of more than 200 students.

Union Academy’s Juliette Katsoulis was the overall winner at the middle school level, receiving the Mary Mayberry Award for her poem “Flipped Houses.” Bartow High’s Emily Sowell won in the high school category, receiving the Robert J. Fisher Award for her poem “The Light Post(?).”

The Poetry Awards are sponsored by PCPS’ Secondary Literacy department and are open to public, private and charter school students throughout Polk County. Congratulations to this year’s winners:

  • Chase Davis, Berkley Accelerated Middle School (sixth grade)
