James Murphy III won’t be forgotten at Lena Vista Elementary.

Murphy retired from Lena Vista last year after a remarkable 35-year career as the school’s PE teacher. Earlier this month, students and staff gathered for a ceremony to name the school’s PE pavilion in his honor.

Murphy joined PCPS in 1988 and spent the entirety of his career at Lena Vista. He was known as an effective PE teacher who also encouraged students to be good citizens.

Murphy returned to Lena Vista this month, where the school unveiled a new sign for the Coach Murphy Pavilion.

“He was a great role model, his former students still speak highly of him,” said Principal Micah Edwards. “This is to honor his dedicated service for multiple generations in Auburndale. He lives here, he loves this community and he’s had a lasting impact.”
