George Jenkins High and Polk State College have a good thing going.

For several years now, the schools have teamed up for the Eagle to Eagle event (named after their common mascot), in which Polk State representatives visit the GJHS campus, meet with students interested in attending the college, and grant them acceptance to Polk State if they fulfill admission requirements.

George Jenkins High has been developing a similar relationship with Florida Southern College through the Eagles to Mocs event, held on site at the GJHS campus with visiting FSC reps.

Both initiatives have been quite successful. The grand total for this year: 14 GJHS students were admitted to Polk State, and seven students were admitted to Florida Southern.

“I just love the collaboration between the GJHS counseling department and our postsecondary institutions to make this happen for students,” said Monique Byrd, PCPS' college and career specialist. “There is an ease of access for students who may not normally have the ability to get on a college campus and interact with advisors. I feel like this motivates students who participate, as well as their peers. We look forward to these events every year.”
