Lawton Chiles was one of Florida's most popular governors and was nicknamed "Walkin' Lawton"for his walking tours through the state while on the campaign trail. He was governor from 1991 until his death in 1998 and his political career included stints as a U.S. Senator (1971-1989) and member of both the Florida House and Senate.
