Dr. James Gardner was the first black chairman of Florida's Board of Regents and served as chairman for two years. Overall, was a Board of Regents member for nine years. Assistant to the president of Nova Southeastern University. First African-American appointed Assistant Superintendent in Broward County Public Schools. Also served Broward as Broward Deputy Superintendent. Was President of the Florida State Teachers' Association.
