Harrison Graduate Wins Florida “Arts for Life!” Scholarship

Chalk up another honor for Sylvia Nicholas-Patterson.

The Harrison School for the Arts graduate is among this year’s winners of the Arts for Life! scholarships. There were just 25 recipients selected from more than 600 “exceptional” visual and performing artists statewide; Nicholas-Patterson was one of three winners for creative writing.

The scholarship recipients are selected by a committee of experts in creative writing, dance, drama, film, music and visual art.

The Arts for Life! scholarship program, now in its 22nd year, is presented by the Tallahassee-based Foundation for Excellence in Education. The program is open to graduating seniors from Florida’s public, private, charter and home schools.

Nicholas-Patterson also was one of just eight students (and the only Floridian) to receive the Gold Medal Portfolio Award for writing this year. The honor is part of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, described as “the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for young artists and writers in grades 7-12.”
