George Gause was the first African-American city commissioner and mayor of Bartow and served on numerous Bartow city boards. Governor Reubin Askew appointed Mr. Gause to advisory boards of the State of Florida Council of Community Affairs and the Polk County Advisory Committee. He was also the first African-American to be elected to the Polk County School Board.
