Painting Honoring Florida Scrub Jay

Check out this super scrub-jay painted by a team of artists at Pinewood Elementary!

Teacher Roberto Robles enlisted his fourth-graders to produce the artwork. It is expected to be displayed in the Florida Capitol office of Rep. Sam Killebrew, who has advocated for the Florida scrub-jay to be designated as the state’s new official bird (a title currently held by the mockingbird).

Fun fact: Florida scrub-jays are the state’s only endemic bird, meaning you won’t find them anywhere else.

So, back to Pinewood. Robles said he designed the project as a way of developing teamwork skills. Students worked together in groups of seven, with each having a specific role; each group spent 10 minutes painting before rotating to another crew.

Robles noted that individual student artworks are usually submitted for display in the Capitol, so he is especially proud that Pinewood came together for a team effort.

“They showed collaboration skills, time management and helped each other,” he said. “This was made by almost 40 students — a single artwork, all working together.”
