Our newest elementary school is taking shape!

South Pointe Elementary is being built at 9525 State Highway 653 in the southernmost point of Winter Haven (hence the name).

The state-of-the-art campus is expected to open in August for the 2023-24 school year, led by Principal Dart Meyers, formerly of Frostproof Ben Hill Griffin Jr. Elementary.

South Pointe is a traditional, zoned K-5 public school, and parents in the attendance zone can enroll now.

You can determine your zoned school here: polkschoolsfl.com/zonefinder.

Other enrollment details can be found at polkschoolsfl.com/enroll.

South Pointe measures approximately 127,000 square feet and will have capacity to serve nearly 1,000 students, helping us keep pace with our rapidly growing community.

Earlier this year we conducted a naming survey for the new school, and South Pointe was the most popular choice. The other options were Osprey Elementary, Osprey Landing Elementary and Sensabaugh Elementary — named for the late Effie Reeve Sensabaugh, a longtime educator in Winter Haven.

A naming committee of school, district and community leaders recommended incorporating the other naming options into the school. So South Pointe’s mascot will be the osprey, the outdoor dining area will be informally known as Osprey Landing, and the media center could be named after Effie Sensabaugh, if the school’s advisory committee wishes to pursue it.

South Pointe staff have established a temporary office at Eagle Lake Elementary in Winter Haven, and can be reached at 863-317-8317. They’re also holding an enrollment event for zoned families on April 18 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at CenterPoint Church in Winter Haven.
